Today is The Day

My friend Emma is due today. Her baby girl is rumored to arrive on this March 15, 2010. But, who knows? First babies are often late. I was two weeks late. My mom too big to fit in the front seat of the car.

In honor of Emma and other ladies in my life who are expecting this year (and also probably because I’m getting to the age when women start feeling the urge to nest and brood), I have been reading a lot about pregnancy and childbirth. E introduced me to the documentary The Business of Being Born. I have an iPhone app that tells me how big her baby is (now, as big as a watermelon) and I have resumed reading the famous mommy blog Dooce.

Today, I wrote this email to E. It’s gross in the bodily fluids sort of way. So, don’t read if you’re squeamish.

“Today, I blew my nose for about three minutes, but couldn’t get all the gunk out.
So, I sniffed it all in as hard as I could and hacked it up out of my mouth.
It was chunkier than tapioca pudding. More like beef stew, with green mucus chunks substituted for the beef. Vegetarian style.

I thought of you.
I hope your mucous plug comes out soon!”

Never knew about mucous plugs before this.

Looking forward to meeting the baby soon!

And looking forward to getting over my yucky cold real soon, too.

Have you read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin? If not, it is definitely worth checking out!
  • Connie: Never read it! I'm only just getting the pregnancy itch and all the thirst for knowledge that comes with that. I am ordering it from Amazon now. My sister-in-law is pregnant, so in addition to Emma, I'm living vicariously through her!
  • Hi Lauren,

Just checking out your site for the very first time. Funny this is the first post I see. I'm due in 4 weeks - my mucus plug will be freed!
  • Carrie: First, CONGRATULATIONS!! Please post pictures of yourself! Second, hahahaha. This is one of my more bodily posts, and of course, it's the day you read. I'll post something calmer today! Really excited for you!
