Eating around the clock

Besides ice on the neck, the other thing that helped me during my almost¬†hyperemesis gravidarum¬†scare (see IVs, see weight loss, see Kate Middleton) was eating every two hours around the clock. Around the Clock. Often with tears and grumpiness (these did not help). I’d go to sleep around 8 p.m. Jake would wake me up with a small potato and butter around 10 p.m. Wah wah wah. Grumble grumble grumble. Whimper. Whine. He’s wake me up again at midnight to eat. Perhaps peanut butter toast, or just butter on toast. He’d wake me up again at 2 a.m. Probably a cracker or more toast. Then, he’d go to sleep. I’d wake up around 4 a.m. to eat again. Yogurt, if I was feeling adventurous. Then fall asleep on the couch, wake up at 6 a.m. to eat. You get the point. This helped keep the belly full enough to keep the nausea sort of at bay and kept the weight on and the baby healthy. “Sort of at bay” is relative, though, as at this point (weeks 6 – 20ish), I threw up between one and three times a day. But, eating every two hours packs in the calories and pounds. For the worst of it, I stopped taking prenatal vitamins. Have you smelled those things? Ugh.
